How Social Media Almost Destroyed My Self-Worth
⭐️ Don't Let It Happen To You
Social media can be cool. It’s a great way to keep in touch with friends and family or see what’s going on in the world, but have you ever paid particular attention to how it’s affecting you and your ‘real’ life?
⁉️Maybe you’ve heard this before: ‘Comparison is a thief of joy.’
𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐲 𝐦𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡?
𝟏. I began to lose my confidence.
I became so focused on what others appeared like in their bright, happy pictures that I started comparing myself and my life to them.
If you know me and saw a photo of my family in matching outfits, you would immediately think we’d been abducted and forced into that clothing and pose!
It’s just not me, not us, and not what I would even want—so why was I second-guessing that?
💥What I lost sight of was that those photos were explicitly chosen. They are often staged and filtered to give the allure that everything is lovely and perfect.
𝟐. It stifled my ambition. As my confidence faded, I noticed I wasn’t as inclined to work toward success. I felt like I was ‘less than’ the others I was seeing, and I started to get a ‘why bother’ attitude about things. If my life wasn’t going to look picture perfect or make that kind of money, what was the point?
𝟯. Worst of all, it began to take away my happiness. Due to how I’d been comparing myself to everyone and everything being scrolled across my screen daily, I felt like crap. I was discouraged and disappointed in myself - my body, surroundings, everything!
Why didn’t my life look like so many amazing lives constantly being pushed before me?
BECAUSE IT’S NOT REAL.
And even if it is, so what?
The beauty in life comes from creating a world YOU love surrounded by people who love and support YOU.
I would rather serve a shitty-looking dinner to a disheveled-looking bunch of people I LOVE than spend my time trying to impress ANYONE.
So, if you ever feel like ‘everyone’ is doing better than you, please STOP and remind yourself: The only person you need to compare yourself to is who you were yesterday.
Your time is your most valuable asset. Don’t waste it trying to be someone you’re not. It’s YOUR life.
LIVE IT YOUR WAY!
Love,
Jess💕
